The Maine Cast On is the Thumb (Long Tail) Version of the Twisted Cast On.

The method to create this twist is totally different than the method used with the sling shot version of the long tail, but the end result is identical.

This is a truism of knitting—there are frequently many ways to achieve the same result—It doesn’t matter HOW you knit, there is a way to get the desired result.

If you use the Thumb version of the Long Tail, and have been missing out on the twisted version of the long tail--you now have a way to resolve that!

There are several different ways to create a Long Tail Cast On--In the US, the most common method is sometimes called the Sling Shot method, but in UK the Thumb Method is more common. The Thumb Style of the long cast on often a more comfortable method for knitters who knit holding the yarn in their right hand.

Simple cast ons come in various "flavors" --you can have forward loops, backwards loops, or combinations of forward and backward, (even twisted loops)

Sometimes, a single simple cast stitch can be used as Make 1--and then, its nice to know that you can change the orientaion of the loops.

This cast on, (any eyelet cast on) is a bit persnickity.. but with a little practice, not all that hard.

(I manage to do it almost sight unseen because the camera gets in the way of my view!--and while I have a few problems--it is still not that hard to do. And my problems are the sort you are likely to have--and you get to see how I deal with them, and resolve them.)

Eyelet cast ons--this one and Emily Ocker are beautiful ways to start an knit in the round project.

The Channel Island Cast On, is as it's name suggests, is from the Channel Island.

It is a strong, attractive, stretchy cast on, one classically used with gurnsey type sweater, but it is also excellent for socks or use as a cast on for top down sweaters

It is not particularly hard, but it does have some details that are important.

Traditionally, the cast on is followed by a few rows of garter stitch, but it is not unattractive when followed immediately by 1 X 1 ribbing.

The Braided Cast On

The Braided Cast On is a variation of the Long Tail Cast On.

It can be worked with 2 yarns (both the same color) or with a number of yarns, in different colors. --5 colors/yarns is about the limit, after that, the yarns that create the braids become too long, and become likely to catch on things and snag.

This cast on demonstrates working with 3 strands/colors.

This Cast On looks lovely when paired with Latvian Braids (part 1, part 2)

There are many, many ways of working a Crocheted Cast On--this is the way that works best for me!--It is especially suited for knitters who are not also crocheters.

One advantage of the crochet cast on, is the neat chain stitch edge it creates. This edge perfectly matches a standard (and several other) Cast (bind) Off edges.

The crochet cast on can be a primary cast on, or it can be worked in waste yarn and be a provisional Cast On.

This Cast On is part of the Single Yarn cast ons.

It is not the easiest cast on to learn, but it is an excellent, attractive, stretchy cast on suitable for ribbing-- (the Russian woman who taught it to me said "It is THE cast on to use for ribbing")
